Interim meeting in Galway, Ireland

The second meeting of the PUMEC group took place in Galway Ireland on February 14 and 15. Yes, it was Valentine’s Day but the meeting concerned itself exclusively with the use of media in teaching rather than with the exchange of roses and love notes!

Following the discussions at our first meeting in Berlin in November 2010 the group went into more depth on the issues of modern technology usage to enhance the learning experience of students and the competence of teachers.  To stimulate the discussion two presentations were made by guest speakers to illustrate innovative language teaching methods. The first presentation demonstrated the use of an especially developed on-line tool and social network site for learning Gaelic. The presentation on the second day was a beginner Spanish lesson using video at the beginning and at the end of the lesson. The meeting attendees then had to use their newly acquired language skills to order lunch at the Spanish restaurant across the street!

The main body of the meeting was taken up with proposals from each of the PUMEC team members on whether there should be a tangible output from the project  and what it should be, or whether the aims of the project should be confined to learning and sharing of experiences since that is all that the regulations require. The attendees were unanimous that there should be a definite output and if possible the output should be something that could be built upon in future projects.

The conclusion of the meeting was that over the next several months all participants would send references, links, suggestions, and ideas for media-based learning resources to VCAT who would set up a Wiki on the project web site for cataloguing as many of these resources as possible. This new facility would be named, “Wiki-teach” or “Teach-Wiki” whichever worked best. At the June meeting in Krakow further decisions would be made about the Wiki and the information it contains.
